Kesha making music to 'reclaim joy' after legal battle

Kesha revealed that making new music has been a powerful way for her to "reclaim joy" following her lengthy legal battle with former music producer Dr. Luke. The Tik Tok singer's career faced a significant setback in 2014 amid a series of lawsuits with Dr. Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald.

Kesha accused Dr. Luke of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2005, while the producer claimed the singer had breached her contract and defamed him. Their legal dispute, which spanned nearly a decade, was finally settled in June 2023.

In a recent interview for the November 2024 issue of Elle magazine, Kesha reflected on how writing her new single, "Joyride," has been part of her healing process.

"You know the Buddhist saying that life is pain? I found that to be very true in my life," Kesha shared. "Everybody knows me as a fun human being. My soul is very fun. My name means 'innocent joy.' But, you know, there's only so much somebody can take before just feeling wrecked... My soul needs this album. I need to reclaim my joy. Because I fought so f**king long and hard for it."

Though she hasn't yet decided on a title for her upcoming sixth studio album, set for release in 2025, Kesha hinted that it will be very different from her 2023 record Gag Order, which focused on more vulnerable and painful emotions.

"This record is my little wild child. My last record that came out, Gag Order, was me giving the more painful emotions a voice. I was really vulnerable," she explained. "Now I'm really trying to make way for the bad b**ch. I'm giving her the moment - because we need the space to have all the emotions safely."

In addition to the emotional shift in her music, Kesha also reflected on her new independence, having recently launched her own label, Kesha Records.

"I'm free and it feels good. I have a reminder in my phone that says: 'You're free,'" she said with a smile.

Kesha's upcoming album is expected to embrace her empowered self, marking a fresh chapter in her career after years of battling for creative and personal freedom.
